5 reasons to love Spanish wine
We’ve put together a list of reasons we think you should drink Spanish wines, from supporting the economy to wine as part of the culture!
Number 1: Support the Spanish economy
The first reason to drink Spanish wine is simple, it supports the country’s economy. It is estimated that the wine industry contributes for almost 2% of the country's GDP and creates hundreds of thousands of jobs. This might not be the sexiest reason to buy Spanish wine but we feel it is an important one.
Number 2: Paving the way for more sustainable wine
Spain is leading globally in ecological grape production with 142.100 hectares currently dedicated to organic viticulture, an increase of 33% in the last 4 years. This transformation demonstrates that the Spanish wine industry can adapt whilst respecting the environment. Spain has set a target of increasing the proportion of organic vineyards to 26% by 2027 and achieve carbon neutrality (Net Zero) by 2035.
Number 3: Recovering nearly lost grape varieties
Due to natural causes and climate change many grape varieties have been lost over the past centuries in Spain. Since 2000 over 50 different types of vines have been recovered, of which many not only make beautiful wine but also withstand high temperatures and drought conditions.
Number 4: Quality
With Spain’s diverse terroir, long history of wine making and an extensive selection of native grapes, it is easy to see why Spanish wines are considered by consumers and professionals alike as high quality. Spain also accounts with a quality pyramid which is more specific than EU requirements. As there is so much to learn about these topics we will delve deeper into each one over the coming weeks.
Number 5: Wine is part of Spanish culture
Spain’s wine history dates back nearly 3000 years and has become a part of her traditions and way of life. Not only this, but there is a whole gastronomic culture set around food and wine pairings (something we will include information about in our crib sheets for each wine). Wine in Spain forms parts of ancient religious ceremonies and modern festivals, it is a traditional symbol for hospitality, community and joy.
